Gmail takes on Facebook, Twitter by launching their kewl new service/feature called Google Buzz.

As expected earlier, Google today announced & Launched Google Buzz, a set of social networking tools for Gmail that are designed to take on Facebook and Twitter in terms of live feed results.

Google Buzz launches on two fronts, and Google has issued separate announcements for each: one on the Gmail blog and another on the Google Mobile blog. Here’s a quick look at how each one works, as well as more about Google Buzz in general.

Mainly, The new feature adds a Twitter-like status update system, so you have a new way you can tell everyone what you had for lunch, or point them to the cool new videos you just found on YouTube.

Apple set to launch a new iPhone today in an attempt to hold off smart phone rivals.

The souped-up gadget is expected to have 32GB, twice the amount of current storage memory, and a camera that can take video.

A screen-grab apparently leaked from T-Mobile Netherlands show there are four new models offering 16GB or 32GB of memory in black or white.

According to industry insiders the company will make an announcement at the San Francisco worldwide development conference at 6pm BST.<

The handset is expected to have a 3.2MP camera, compared with the current 2MP camera and a built-in compass.

Blogger John Gruber, who has accurately predicted a number of Apple's product launches early, said he heard the new gadget would be called iPhone 3GS although he didn't know what the 'S' stood for.

Steve Jobs, the chief executive, is expected to return from sick leave to attend the launch. He is currently suffering a 'hormonal imbalance' following treatment for pancreatic cancer in 2004.

The conference comes just days after the launch of the Palm Pre smartphone.

Priced at $199.99 (£125), the Pre combines touchscreen controls with a physical keyboard and is able to run several applications at once, unlike the iPhone. It has been praised for its 'beautiful industrial design'.

Web design and development involves three levels:

• interaction design (navigation support, homepage layout, templates, search, etc.)
• content design (the actual writing on the pages, as well as the design of any other media types used to communicate content as opposed to site interaction)

Just as in a hamburger, the middle layer is the most tasty and attracts the most attention, including much of my own work on Web usability. I have come to realize that the outer two layers are more important in many ways: users only care about content (in other words, no, the medium is not the message; the message is the message) and the usability of a website is more a function of how it is managed than of how good its designers are.

The winners of the Horizon Interactive Awards were unveiled last week. In this eighth annual competition over 2000 sites were reviewed from 32 countries. The participants were judged on their creativity, user experience, and technical merit in media ranging from Web sites to DVDs. Several Drupal sites brought home awards, including those from Palantir.net, studio:module, and pingVision.
